Woo Tour : The Fillmore Silver Spring : Silver Spring, MD : 12 07 2011 :
The night started backstage with Anthony Hamilton signing some dope posters that a graphic designer for The Fillmore created. He then asked me about my photography gear, and how much wallet-damage it did, and was shocked by my answer. His reply, “But, it gets the job done though, huh!”. Me: You know it! Closer to showtime, I entered the pit, found my spot, and had my pre-show conversation with God.
Anthony Hamilton opened the show with a new uptempo song “Sucka for You” off of his forthcoming “Back to Love” album. Mixed into the set were some favorites of mine – “Cool”, “Point of It All”, “Can’t let go”, and “Charlene”. The ladies were loving the medley with “Better Days”, “Never Love Again”, “Float”. During the set, he commented on how he always make it a point to give God praise in his shows. He followed it up by sayin, “If you don’t like it, go pee. We’ll hold your spot for you.” One thing that I liked was that he didn’t try to force-feed his new material, and the majority of his set was those big songs that the people wanted to hear. I think the set list was just right.
I’ve seen him in concert almost a dozen times, and he’s always consistent. Another great show!
I bought my Mom and 19 year old Nephew tickets to see the show, and at the end, this was the feedback:
Mom: “Van, that thing was off-the-hook! Thank you! ***slaps me high-five. (You know how Moms think they’re hip.)
Nephew: “That man Anthony Hamilton is a beast! I think I was the youngest person in here, and the only dude without a date! Lol.” – Note: My Nephew has been a fan since Coming From Where I’m From, which released some time around 2003. But hey, he’s also a big Temptations fan.
Anthony’s Manager blessed me with a copy of the new album “Back to Love (available on iTunes) a little early, and I like it a lot. “Mad” and “I’ll Wait” might be my favorites. When Tuesday, December 13th rolls around, make sure you pick up a copy.
At a meet and greet, I asked Anthony to sign a mat for my concert photography exhibit. I asked him to write something that he said to me in an email, regarding photos from a previous performance - ”Continue to capture God’s beauty.”
Once the show ended, I made sure my two guests were situated for the meet and greet with Anthony Hamilton, because I had to cut out early to go and shoot another show. Keep in mind, it was 11:15pm.
This is what I do – and I love it.
