The Fillmore Silver Spring : Silver Spring, MD : 12 30 2011 :
Initially, I didn’t bother requesting credentials for this show because I was supposed to be shooting a birthday party. I got the okay to shoot 24 hours before showtime, and I’m so glad I did. The show was amazing and then some! The overall energy in the building was unbelievable. It was my second time shooting The Roots, but I’ve seen them a few times in the past. These guys are super talented, and they vibe off of each other’s energy and the crowd’s energy. It’s obvious why they’re the house band on so many different shows.
They performed a few new songs that I wasn’t too familiar with, but I was completely satisfied once I heard some of my favorites from the “Do You Want More” and “Things Fall Apart” albums. Seeing Bilal on stage with them was pretty dope too!
One thing that I’ll say is this – at a The Roots concert, a photographer can’t really capture the essence in the first three songs. I’m really interested in shooting more of their shows with all-access. Between you and I, I snuck a couple of shots toward the end of the show, because I just couldn’t resist it. It was difficult though, because my 70-200mm 2.8L lens isn’t that easy to disguise. Unfortunately, in what would have been a great action shot of the guitarist jumping off of the bass drum, there’s some dude’s waving arm in it. Thank you so much Mr. Arm-Waver.
